The Backyard Dinner was a celebration of land, community and food. For the project, I collected dirt from 15 yards in the Los Angeles area. This dirt was mixed with porcelain slip and then cast into a set of plates. In July 2006, all participants were invited to the yard of JMOCA in Silverlake for a dinner prepared by me, Christina Vizcarra and Gioj DeMarco. Dinner was served on the plates and extra dirt was utilized in the centerpieces. After the dinner, we washed the dishes and each participant went home with their plates.
