MATTHIAS MERKEL HESS

>> bio

A sixth-generation Iowan, I was born in Cedar Rapids in 1978 and raised in Iowa City. I spent the first five years of my life in grad school with my mom, who earned a metalsmithing MFA in 1983. For college, I moved to Lawrence, Kansas but had important sojourns to New Mexico, Costa Rica and Spain. After earning degrees in journalism and environmental science in 2002, I relocated to the Los Angeles area, where I eventually went back to school in art. Counting my childhood, by my MFA graduation in 2010 I will have spent eight years in graduate school.
